Module Foundations of Health, Disease & Human Constitution

Module Overview Module 1 establishes the complete theoretical foundation of Vedic Health Science, presenting the core principles through which Ayurveda understands the human body, its disorders, and the pathways to restoration. Drawing directly from the classical teachings of Caraka Saṁhitā, this module explains how health is maintained, how disease arises, and how the constitution of each individual determines treatment, longevity, and wellbeing.
Learners will explore the doṣas, dhātus, srotas, agni, āyu, and the laws governing proper and improper therapeutic timing. This module forms the intellectual backbone of the entire course, enabling students to understand all later modules—food science, lifestyle, ethics, sleep, epidemics, and spiritual healing—through a precise classical lens.

What This Module Covers

1. Causes of Disease in the Human Body

A detailed study of the three primary causes of disease—asātmyendriyārtha saṁyoga, prājñāparādha, and kāla‑pariṇāma—and how imbalance arises from improper sensory use, errors of judgment, and seasonal changes.

  • Causes of disease

2. Constitutional Doṣas and Their Treatment

Understanding vāta, pitta, and kapha as governing principles of physiology, psychology, and pathology. Students learn how doṣas become aggravated, how they manifest, and how they are pacified through diet, lifestyle, and medicine.

  • Doṣa theory

**3. Disorders of the Body Channels

\(Srotas\)

and Their Treatment**

A complete mapping of the srotas—the body’s channels of transport—and how their obstruction, depletion, or overflow leads to disease. Treatment principles for each channel are explained.

4. Dhātu Disorders and Their Treatment

Study of the seven dhātus—rasa, rakta, māṁsa, meda, asthi, majjā, śukra—their nourishment cycle, depletion, aggravation, and therapeutic correction.

  • Dhātu theory

**5. Special Discussion on the Blood Dhātu

\(Rakta\)

**

Rakta as the seat of life, its disorders, purification methods, and its role in inflammatory and systemic diseases.

6. Nature of the Bodily Agni

Agni as the central fire of digestion, metabolism, immunity, and cellular intelligence. Types of agni, signs of imbalance, and correction strategies.

  • Agni

**7. Opposite Treatment

\(Viparīta Cikitsā\)

**

The classical rule of treating disease by applying the opposite qualities—hot vs. cold, heavy vs. light, dry vs. unctuous—based on doṣa dominance.

8. Use of Hot Water in Fever

A precise explanation of when hot water is beneficial, when it is harmful, and how its qualities interact with doṣas during fever.

9. Examination of the Patient’s Age

Age‑based diagnostic principles, showing how childhood, adulthood, and old age influence doṣa dominance and treatment selection.

10. Season for Bodily Purification

Understanding when pañcakarma is safe, effective, and contraindicated based on seasonal strength, doṣa behavior, and digestive fire.

11. Proper and Improper Time for Medicine Administration

Rules governing timing of medicines—before food, after food, during digestion, during fasting—and how timing changes therapeutic outcomes.

12. Classification of Substances According to Their Nature

A systematic classification of all substances based on rasa, guṇa, vīrya, vipāka, and prabhāva, forming the basis of Ayurvedic pharmacology.
